昨年開催された第１回ガイアエデュケーションの開講式にメキシコから講師で訪れたジョバンニチャ―ロさんが、Gaia Educationの世界中の卒業生へのニュースレターで、アズワンのことに触れ、真の人間性への復帰を呼びかけています。

　前文にジョンレノンの『イマジン』を挙げ、昨年のアズワンの思い出、特に都市部での学びの試みに焦点を当てて、人間がこの地球上に生きている意味を問い続けている、とスクールや研究所の活動を述べています。
　これから人口のほとんどが都市部で暮らすだろうという予想のもと、ことの重大さを話し、最後にもう一度、私たち人間がなぜこの地球に生きるのか、アズワンの問いに戻ろうと説く内容です。

ガイアエデュケーションのみんなへ

Last year I had the great honor of visiting the As One Community in Suzuka City, Japan. Among the many things that impressed me about their work in an urban setting was the unique school they have created, based on their ScienZ+0 philosophy. In a nutshell, the school is dedicated to researching the questions “what does it mean to be a human being on this Earth?” And “what are we put here for?”

　去年、私は光栄にも、日本の鈴鹿にあるアズワンコミュニティを訪れる機会があった。都市に拠点を置いた彼らの仕事については多くのことに胸を打たれたが、中でも、彼らが、「サイエンズ+０フィロソフィ」にもとづいてユニークな学校をつくっているのが印象深かった。かいつまんで言うと、その学校ではこんな質問が,ひたむきに探究されている。ことに「この地球上で人間が存在している意味は何だろう」そして、「私たちは何のためにここに存在しているのか」

I was left with my own existential questions, especially as we routinely come face to face with the forces of overpopulation, mass extinction of ancient species, climate change, social inequalities, and pollution everywhere. It reminded me of words uttered by Winston Churchill in the midsts of WWII: “In casting up this dread balance sheet and contemplating our dangers with a disillusioned eye, I see great reason for intense vigilance and exertion, but none whatever for panic and despair.” True then, and true now.

　そして自分の中に抱えている疑問を胸にアズワンを離れた。それは人口の増大、種の大量絶滅、気候変動、社会の不平等、そして至るところが汚染されているという脅威にいまや日常的に向き合っているということに。
　それは、第二次世界大戦中にウインストン・チャーチルが述べた言葉を思い起こさせた。「この恐ろしいバランスシートが放り出され、われわれの危険性に向き合うことに、 迷いから覚めた目で 注意深く集中して努力することがどれだけ必要か。しかし、それはパニックになるためでも、絶望するためでもない。」それは全く真実だったし、そして今もそうだ。

Gaia Education’s 4D curriculum urges against the common view that these are the end times as we know them. Yes, present conditions do give us pause, and can be seen as frightening and likely to get worse yet, but we can also see the forces of an eventual breakthrough, even noting that environmental recovery is starting to gather unprecedented strength everywhere. Particularly in cities like Susuka, Japan.

　ガイアエデュケーションの4つのディメンションによる総合的なカリキュラムは、私たちが知っているような、今が終末を迎えているといった常識的な見方とは、逆の方向に推進していこうとしている。そう、現在の条件は、私たちを足止めさせ、脅威となり、さらにもっと悪くなっていくように見えるのだが、しかし、同時にブレークする力も見ることが出来るのだ。環境的な回復が始まり、いたるところで空前の力を結集し始めている。特に、日本の鈴鹿に見られるような街の中で。

Consider that by the end of this century 90% of humans are projected to live in urban areas.

　今世紀の終わりまでには人類の90％が都市部にすむよう計画されていることを考えてみよう。

This transformation implies a changing worldview, where urbanization is seen as the biggest driver of environmental progress, reduction of per capita energy consumption, reduced birth rates, and the reopening of old habitat in abandoned rural areas to wildlife.

　この変革は、挑戦的な世界観になることを意味する。つまり、都市化は、環境的な進捗の最大の推進力となるとみなされる。人口当たりのエネルギー消費を抑え、出生率を下げ、置き去りにされた田舎の古い集落を野生にもう一度もどしていく。

Back to the As One Community question: what does it mean to be a human being on this Earth?
